Our Background

Established in 2003, we are an experienced charity providing specialist independent advocacy for people with learning disabilities. We work for everyone to have equal rights.

Cornwall Advocacy is led by a management board of three trustees and our Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Our CEO is a very experienced learning disabilities nurse who set up and led the development of children’s learning disability services in Cornwall. She has worked with the charity for over 15 years and knows our local community extremely well.

Our Chairperson is a school governor (of many years) and currently vice chair of a local secondary academy. He worked for 40 years in the social care and NHS sectors, mainly with adults and children with learning disabilities.

Our Vice Chairperson has worked with adults and young people with learning disabilities for over 25 years, in both professional and voluntary roles. Our third Trustee has worked in the Civil Service for a number of years and her background is in strategic planning and risk management.

Everyone is extremely passionate about equal rights for people with learning disabilities.

We all share the values of equal rights, empowerment, trust, respect and independence.

We all have personal and/or professional experience of learning disabilities and discrimination.

Our team has many different skills and life experiences that help us to provide advocacy for people with learning disabilities very well.

“I am now the one in control and feel that advocacy really helped me.”

— Neil, a parent who worked with our HOPE project
